THE SHINING
Relationship: Alcoholism
Someone struggling with alcoholism can defiantly affect their family and their relationships, such as, in The Shining Jack’s son does not feel connected to his father at all.. According to the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, children affected by alcoholism are more likely to have trouble with guilt, anxiety, embarrassment, relationships, confusion, anger and depression. The Shining is a perfect example of a family falling apart due to alcoholism. Jack’s young son is not able to have a close relationship with his father and he turns to the “ghosts” of the hotel. The young child is very confused by the mood changes of his father and lack of emotion he shows towards him. The consistent routine of a child is a large part in the development of a child and an alcoholic parent can change that everyday schedule.

THE UNINVITED
Relationship: Death of a Parent
The Uninvited addresses several issues. A child that experiences traumatic events, such as, losing a parent, the death of a loved one or close friend, a suicide attempt and/or psychological problems can be very much damaged and almost to a point of no return, just like Anna. Anna experienced all of these events and as a result did things that caused more pain in her life. According to the Wall Street Journal, “Childhood grief is one of society’s most chronically painful yet most underestimated phenomena.” Anna was a child that was greatly affected by the death of her mother and sister, so much that she had forgotten about the death of her sister. Anna attempted to take her own life in order to deal with the pain of losing someone or people so close to her. The Uninvited shows how just one traumatic event can lead to so much more than what people expect.
